Media and Ideology

Reflection:

While reading the article on Media and Ideology, written by Croteau I was able to get a better understanding of how media is used in today's society. He describes ideology as a belief systems that helps justify the actions of those in power by distorting and misrepresenting reality. The section that caught my attention most was the ideology as normalization. It began to explain how media texts can be seen as basis social norms are articulated. Where as today alot of people use social media such as Facebook to put out their personal business being shared with the public. In fact that may affect others to because at most times it can be negative and looked at the wrong way. I try to stay away from social media especially because alot of people just use it as a tool to vent and post anything they want whether it is positive or negative. There are times if I am on social media alot, I catch myself right away and try to avoid it. However, in the article it states that the fear of media images normalize specific social relations which can make certain ways of behaving seem unexceptional. For example, young teenage girls may be watching a music video and they see someone that looks "flawless" and so pretty and wanting to be like the individual so they try really hard to be that person.

  1. I agree Mallory. I try to stay away from social media too, for this reason. I like how it can connect people, but it can be dangerous how some people use a public website as a diary. And yeah, it can totally negatively influence how someone thinks of themselves

  2. I definitely agree with you Mallory. It caught my attention when Croteau explains the normalization in ideology as well. I am very careful about what I post on social media because of this. One's personal and private life is exposed and subjected to public debate once shared on media.

  3. When I was reading the text the section on normalization also caught my attention. It's interesting to discuss and learn about how media normalizes parts of our lives. I also find myself browsing on social media and I try to stop myself as well!

  4. I agree that social media can definitely normalize and influence certain social interactions. I also agree that today most of this influence is negative. People have become engulfed in social media to the point where it impacts their daily life tremendously. I believe this is one way media has great power over people, like Croteau talks about. Many people do not realize how powerful the media is.
